  • Description:
  • Climate-induced water stress, ecosystem degradation, and weak institutions have significant impacts on coastal communities in Somalia. Livelihoods like pastoralism and agropastoralism heavily rely on water access and suitable grazing areas. Freshwater resources also support fishing livelihoods, coastal ecosystems (e.g., mangroves, reefs), and disaster risk reduction efforts. Climate change exacerbates water scarcity, thereby presenting challenges to the continuity of these traditional livelihoods and the resultant impacts on local economies. The adverse impacts of water-related stocks, such as droughts and floods, can trigger displacement and migration, pushing more people into poverty. Political instability and poor governance contribute to water resource degradation, gender inequality in access to water, and water-related conflicts, thereby exacerbating Fragility, Conflict, and Violence (FCV) situations that undermine community resilience and adaptability. Conversely, improved management of natural resources can have a rebounding effect considering the challenges faced by coastal communities. The consultancy is to investigate the downstream impact of the water harvesting infrastructure in the wadis in Somalia and to develop relevant Nature-Based Solutions to improve the water security and climate resilience from land to sea.
